For the first time, the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) distributed bursary awards employees’children who performed exceptionally at the 2019 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA).

Each student received $30,000. The beneficiaries hailed from Regions Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), Four (Demerara-Mahaica), Five (Mahaica-Berbice), Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) and Lethem, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo). The students all attained 70 to 99 per cent of the total marks.
Imani Daniels, Ashley O’Brien and Raphael Joseph gained a spot at Queen’s College while, David Hoyte will attend St Rose’s High School and Nishaun Samaroo, President’s College.
Delivering remarks, Managing Director of GWI, Richard Van West-Charles encouraged the students to continue to excel.
“I want to say to you that you have the world in front of you, Guyana is going to be a different place where you will grow up to become professionals and you will be permitted to work to be productive citizens of Guyana, of the Caribbean and of the world. You are lucky to be born at a different time from most of us, because Guyana is about to open up for you the young citizens of Guyana to have a different opportunity to maximise you potential” Dr Van West Charles explained.
He further noted that it is GWI’s duty to provide for the students, who are a part of the company’s family.
“This is important because we are seeing your success as the success of the GWI family. So we have to say thanks and once again congratulate you for your success in studying through and getting to the point where the minimum number of marks among the GWI family is 70%,” Charles congratulated the students.
Guyana Times caught up with a few of the students who expressed their satisfaction with company’s gesture.
“I feel good and I am very glad that they are giving out the bursary awards to help people with their school things,” Imani Daniels said.
“The journey was good and I feel happy to get something for my performance,” Anna Austin, the Lethem student who gained a place at the St Ignatius Secondary School stated.
