18th championships of World Council of Dominoes Federation Inc commence
– Guyana aim to come out on top
The 18th championships of the World Council of Dominoes Federation Inc commenced with an opening ceremony on October 5, 2018 at 17:00 hrs at the Carifesta Sports Complex in Georgetown.
This competition will see six teams from around the Caribbean competing for supremacy. Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, St. Lucia and the United States of America will join host Guyana in the tournament, which will be contested in the three-hand mixed pairs, female and male pairs, as well as the four-hand mixed pairs, female and male pairs. Guyana are the current male three-hand defending champions.
The tournament opened with a march-past in which the various countries participated, the nations’ representatives taking to the field to present themselves. The contestants were overlooked by Minister of Social Cohesion; Culture, Youth and Sports, Dr. George Norton,
After the on-field proceedings, various other activities and festivities occurred indoors. That aspect of the opening ceremony was hosted by Guyana’s very own Desiree Edghill, who welcomed the teams to Guyana. In a statement, Edghill urged the competitors to take time to visit Guyana, which she described as one of the most beautiful countries in South America. She said she hoped the visitors would enjoy their sojourn in Guyana.
As the programme continued, Minister Norton took to the podium and spoke to the large delegations about the importance of dominoes and its ability to bring about unity.
Norton said, “In Guyana, domino is an important tool that is used to promote unity and inclusion of our people. Thus it helps me, in my work as the Minister responsible for Social Cohesion, Culture Youth and Sport, to help to break down the barrier or break the ice against racial divide. Yes a good game of dominoes can work like magic”.
The game of dominoes was played to open the tournament, with Minister Norton, Secretary General of the World Council Dominoes Federation Inc, Gregory Blenman and Guyana Domino Association (GDA) President Faye Joseph seated at the table playing a good game of dominoes in which dominoes enthusiasts loved and cheered them on.
