The Public Infrastructure Ministry’s Electrical Engineering Department on Monday reported the theft of 37 Light-Emitting Diode (LED) street lights.
Eleven were stolen from Eccles Industrial Site, East Bank Demerara (EBD); seven from Farm Housing Scheme, EBD; seven from Schoonord Access Road, West Bank Demerara (WBD); five from the Linden-Soesdyke Highway; three from Lombard Street, Georgetown; two from Providence Access Road, EBD; and two from Takuba Road, Lodge Housing Scheme, Georgetown.
According to the information received, the replacement cost per unit amounts to $73,000 and as such, will cost the Ministry $2,701,000 to replace all 37 lights. The missing lights were installed in November 2019.
As a result of this, the Ministry is pleading with the perpetrators to refrain from committing larceny against their country, as the caretaker Government of Guyana seeks to improve safety and security on Guyana’s road network.
The general public is kindly asked to report any suspicious act or theft to the Ministry’s Public Relations Department on 592-227-0799, via Facebook Messenger at the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, or via email at [email protected].
In April, one man was caught vandalising a traffic light in Georgetown.
Prior to that, batteries were removed from the cabinets for the traffic lights installed at the Sheriff and Garnett Streets; Camp Street and Lamaha Avenue; Conversation Tree and the Railway Embankment and UG Road and Rupert Craig Highway by unknown persons.
Despite these recurring instances, the Ministry has failed to prosecute anyone. (G1)
