Two men who were being interrogated for the murder of 24-year-old Lawrence Raymond Benjamin of Lot 5 Icehouse Road, Timehri, East Bank Demerara (EBD) have allegedly confessed to the heinous crime.
This was confirmed by Police Commander of Region Four (B), Kurleigh Simon, who stated that the duo remained in custody assisting with the investigations.
He told Guyana Times that the detectives were able to arrest the two men after reviewing the surveillance video from Close-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, along with information received from persons in the area.
He noted that the file would be sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice to determine the way forward.
Benjamin was stabbed at least three times – once to his neck and twice to his chest by three men in the vicinity of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.
After the stabbing incident, Benjamin, the father of a five-month-old baby, walked to a nearby shop where he sat in a chair. Persons recalled the young man panting for breath and he subsequently died.
Benjamin was last seen by his family on Sunday around 09:00h when he left home. As he left home that morning, he reportedly told his mother “yuh gon cry fuh meh”.
The now-dead man, according to information received, was walking the streets in Timehri on Sunday morning “picking trouble” with everyone. He was a known substance user and it was believed that he had taken an illegal substance before his death.
