2 arrested following discovery of 12-gauge shotgun

The shotgun that was retrieved

Two persons, one of whom is a female driver, are now in police custody following the discovery of a 12-gauge shotgun at Islington in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Police have said they had attempted to intercept motor car PAB 3302, but the vehicle sped off towards the Islington seawall. As the car came to a halt, a 33-year-old construction worker who lives in the Overwinning Housing Scheme in New Amsterdam reportedly exited the vehicle and started to run, taking with him an object wrapped in transparent plastic.
Ranks gave chase, and saw the man trying to dispose of the object over the seawall.
He later surrendered to the police. Because the tide was high, ranks remained at the Islington Seawall with the suspect in order to retrieve the object he had thrown overboard. The object was retrieved at about 21:00h, and proved to be a 12-gauge shotgun.
The suspect was asked whether he was the holder of a firearm licence, but he remained silent. He was told of the offence committed, cautioned, and taken into custody. The driver of the motor car from which the suspect exited has also been arrested, and both suspects were escorted to the Central Police Station.
Investigations are in progress.
