Home News 2 cops to be charged for accepting bribe – Region 6 Commander
Two Policemen in Berbice are expected to be placed before the courts for allegedly demanding a bribe from a Corentyne man.
Police in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) had arrested three of their own, including a Sergeant, for their involvement in relation to the alleged bribe to cover up an illegal firearm bust.
However, on Wednesday, Regional Commander, Senior Superintendent Shivpersaud Bacchus said that there was not enough evidence against one of the ranks and so he would return to regular duty, but the other two would be charged.
It had been reported that $400,000 was paid as a bribe after an illegal firearm was discovered at Albion, Region Six.
The firearm was allegedly discovered by a security guard attached to an entertainment center in the village on Sunday morning and reportedly handed over to Police Officers.
Commander Bacchus after detailing some of the alleged actions of the officers referred to the incident as a “a corrupt transaction”.
“They would have demanded money by menace from members of the society at a popular nightspot in the Central Corentyne area,” the Commander said.
This publication understands that a Police Sergeant along with two ranks allegedly contacted the suspect and one of the ranks claimed he was the regional commander while another posed as the crime chief. They reportedly went with the Sergeant’s personal vehicle and rather than going to the Albion Police Station, they went to Rose Hall Town Outpost and allegedly sought to have the matter not investigated for $1 million. However, after negotiations, the officers allegedly settled for a $400,000 bribe.
“If so be the case, we will investigate, and if the investigation proves that there is sufficient evidence that rank will be dealt with condignly.”
According to the commander, the firearm is with the Police and the suspect is in custody.
It was reported that shortly after midnight on Sunday morning, a large crowd had gathered at the food court when there were reports that someone had discharged a firearm.
A guard attached to the enterprise reportedly went in to the crowd and dispersed one round into the air causing the crowd to scatter. Initial investigations by the Police revealed that a couple had a misunderstanding and the male discharged one round. The firearm was found after the suspect dropped it and fled the scene.
According to the Commander, instances of bribery is a two-way process and both parties are equally guilty. (G4)
