Traffic ranks on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) have arrested and charged two persons for driving while they were above the prescribed alcohol limit.
Charged are 42-year-old Vishnu Bickram of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara (ECD), and 32-year-old Bheesham Persaud of Third Street, Montrose, ECD.
Police said Bickram was arrested at the Mon Repos Public Road, ECD, charged, and processed to attend the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Persaud was arrested at Montrose Public Road and will attend the Sparendaam Magistrate Court, ECD, also on Wednesday.
Driving while above the prescribed alcohol limit attracts a charge for the offence of driving under the influence (DUI) which carries a fine. Persons can be charged if, when tested, their blood alcohol content is found to exceed the prescribed limit of 35 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, and their blood alcohol concentration exceeds 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.
Two weeks ago, two persons were arrested and charged for allegedly driving while they were above the prescribed alcohol limit.
They were Sachin Singh, 19, of Second Street, Belmonte, Mahaica, ECD, and 27-year-old Ryan Dabyram of Supply, Mahaica, ECD.
Over the past few months, the Police Force has been advising persons to desist from driving under the influence.
This comes on the heels of Police statistics showing that driving under the influence of alcohol and excessive speeding are the leading causes of accidents, including fatal ones, in Guyana. (G9)
