2 Essequibo Coast men face drug charges

Two men from the Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon–Supenaam), have appeared in court this week facing separate narcotics-related charges.
Aeon Patterson, 36, of Jib Housing Scheme, was charged with possession of smoking utensils and possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. The offences occurred on Saturday, at his residence. Patterson, who is unemployed, appeared before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir at Anna Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

The charge of possession of a smoking utensil was laid under Section 12(1)(d)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act, Chapter 10:10. The possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking charge was brought under Section 5(1)(a)(i) of the same Act. Patterson pleaded not guilty to both charges. Bail was objected to by the prosecution, and he was remanded to prison. The cases were adjourned to 4th February 2026 for disclosure of statements.
In a separate matter, Fernando Johnson, 20, a labourer of the Charity Extension Scheme, was charged with possession of narcotics. The offence occurred on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at Charity Backstreet.
Johnson appeared at Charity Magistrate’s Court on Monday, before Magistrate Mohabir. He pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 4(1) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act, Chapter 10:10. Johnson was fined $20,000 and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.
