Two men of Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), were fined a total of $380,000 after appearing before the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on traffic-related offences. Dwayne Stoby, 38, a construction worker of Riverstown, Essequibo Coast, was charged with multiple breaches of the motor vehicle and road traffic laws. The offences stemmed from an incident that occurred on January 27 on the Middlesex Public Road, Essequibo Coast.

Stoby was charged with being an unlicensed driver, contrary to Section 23(1) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02; operating an uninsured motor vehicle, contrary to Section 3(1) of the Motor Vehicle Insurance (Third Party Risks) Act, Chapter 51:03; having an obscured rear identification mark, contrary to Section 13 of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02; and operating an unlicensed motor vehicle, contrary to Section 22(1) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02.

The matters were heard on Friday before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir, and after the charges were read to Stoby, he pleaded guilty. For the offence of operating an unlicensed motor vehicle, he was fined $10,000, with a default sentence of two weeks’ imprisonment. For having an obscured rear identification mark, he was fined $100,000, with a default sentence of three months’ imprisonment. For being an unlicensed driver, he was fined $30,000, with a default sentence of three months’ imprisonment. For operating an uninsured motor vehicle, he was fined $40,000, with a default sentence of three months’ imprisonment. The total fines imposed on Stoby amounted to $180,000.
Drunk driving
In a separate matter, Totaram Narine, 41, a carpenter of Huist Dieren, Essequibo Coast, was charged with driving while his breath alcohol level exceeded the prescribed limit. The offence was committed on February 12, 2026, at Huist Dieren, Essequibo Coast. The charge was laid under Section 39A(1) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02, as amended by the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic (Amendment) Act 17 of 2022.
Narine appeared before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir on Friday at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court. The charge was read to him, and he pleaded guilty.
He was fined $200,000, with a default sentence of six months’ imprisonment.
