2 more die from COVID-19; death toll now stands at 111

– 24 new cases detected in 24 hours

Two more persons who tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) died on Sunday, according to the Ministry of Health. This now brings the death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic to 111.
These latest fatalities are a 55-year-old male from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), who died while receiving care at the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and a 78-year-old male from Region One (Barima-Waini), who died while receiving care at a medical facility.
Officials of the Ministry have contacted all relatives and persons to facilitate contact tracing and rapid assistance to everyone who may have been exposed to the now-deceased person.
During the past week, Guyana recorded seven COVID-19 deaths – the week begun with the death toll at 104. The last fatalities were on Friday when two more persons died from the novel coronavirus.
Meanwhile, the Health Ministry also reported on Sunday that 24 new COVID-19 cases were detected in the last 24 hours.
According to the Ministry’s updated COVID-19 dashboard, the total number of confirmed cases in the country has risen to 3734.
Of these, however, only 971 cases are currently active, that is, 13 patients are in the COVID-19 ICU and the remaining 958 are in isolation, 78 are in institutional isolation and the other 880 in home isolation.
Additionally, there are 44 persons in institutional quarantine. To date, some 2654 persons have recovered from the life-threatening disease.
Guyana has tested a total of 16,865 persons thus far for the novel coronavirus.
Of the 24 new cases recorded on Sunday, two are from Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), a whopping 21 cases are from the Demerara-Mahaica Region, and one is from Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni).
The figures in other regions remained the same, that is, 603 cases in the Barima-Waini Region, 61 in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), 25 cases in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), 55 in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), 343 in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), 372 in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), and 129 cases in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
Only recently, the global death toll from the novel coronavirus surpassed one million.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), as of Sunday, some 1,107,374 deaths were reported globally along with 39,596,858 confirmed cases.
The region of the Americas, that is, Latin America and the Caribbean, has been identified as the most affected region by the virus. WHO also reported on Sunday that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases increased to 18,593,565, while the death toll has gone up to 605,168.
Meanwhile, Guyanese are reminded to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 Emergency Measures (No 9), which are in effect until October 31, 2020. This order emphasises, among other things, the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving home; the importance of maintaining the six feet physical distance from others; and the need for good hand hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
