Days after six men were busted with more than 400 kilograms (1000 pounds) of ganja along the Pomeroon River, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), two of them pleaded guilty to the crime when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Tuesday.
Guyana Times understands that Fabian Gonsalves and Partab Singh pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to them. On the other hand, Dinesh Williams, Frank Gonsalves, Antonio Ramlagan, and David Jardine all pleaded not guilty and were remanded to prison by Magistrate Leron Daly. They all will return to court on October 11 when Gonsalves and Singh will be sentenced.
It was reported that the sting operation was executed by agents of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) and members of the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard on Friday last at Father’s Beach, Moruca.
The aim of the operation was to gather critical intelligence on the movement of narcotics from Guyana to other Caribbean territories by a local drug trafficking organisation.
It was during the operation that 1007.2 pounds of foreign marijuana were unearthed along with three go-fast vessels and six outboard engines (two 250-horsepower, one 200-horsepower, and three 200-horsepower). The estimated street value of the narcotics is US$2.26 million at its final destination.
Following the operation, the six men were arrested and charged.
