2 shot by trigger-happy Policeman

A 20-year-old Friendship, East Bank Demerara (EBD) man is now critical after he and his cousin were allegedly shot by Police on Monday evening.
The injured are Christopher Charles and 20-year-old Esther Wiltshire.
Based on reports received, the duo was part of a search party including Police ranks. They were reportedly searching for a family member. However, during the search, an altercation erupted between Charles and another man with whom he had an old grievance.
Upon hearing the commotion, other family members rushed out to enquire and saw Charles in pursuit of another man. He was armed with “something” in his hand, family members stated.
Despite family members trying to calm him down, two Police Officers who were part of the search party had their weapons pointed at Charles as they instructed him to drop his weapon.
<<<Guyana Times>>> understands that a fearful Charles allegedly dropped the sharp object and surrendered to the Police. He was, nevertheless ,gun-butted. In an attempt to avoid the blows, the young man stepped back and ended up falling into a trench. He was later taken out of the trench by the cops.
The injured man’s family said they began to beg the officers since Charles had already surrendered, but the two officers pointed their guns in their direction while threatening to shoot the 20-year-old.
“When I heard that, I got very angry. We all surround my cousin to protect him from getting shot and my cousin Esther hugged my cousin around his waist,” a family member said.
The family member explained that one of the officers flew into a rage and placed the gun to Charles’ abdomen. In fear, the young man held the officer’s hand and slightly pulled it to the side.
Charles’ family said the officer got even angrier, and placed the gun back to Charles’ waist and pulled the trigger.
“All of us fell to the ground, because we didn’t know who get shoot. When we raise up, we see my cousin get shoot in his belly. The bullet passed through and through my cousin and came out through his butt.”
Wiltshire was shot in her right hand, since she was hugging Charles at the time he was shot.
The man was reportedly picked up and placed in the back of the Police vehicle, and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. He remains a patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Wiltshire was treated and sent away.
The matter was reported and an investigation has been launched. The Police on Thursday evening confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the shooting incident.
