2 synthetic tracks to be completed this year – Minister Norton
Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility to Sport; Dr. George Norton confirmed that synthetic tracks will be constructed in Regions 6 and 10 before the end of 2018.
During an interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI), Minister Norton established that approval was given by the consultant for the construction of both synthetic tracks in the East Berbice/Corentyne and Linden regions.
“I am happy to report that already the two sites, that is the one in Linden, particularly Wismar and the other in New Amsterdam at Burnham’s Park, they were visited by the consultant and the engineer and they reported to me, it was favourable. The consultant told me that it is a very suitable area and he is looking forward to starting work as early as possible”. Said Norton.
The Minister was aware that the move was a lift for track and field as well as the entire sport fraternity. He said the availability of the facilities will put Guyana on par with its Regional colleagues.
“That elusive Olympic medal or another will certainly be within our reach in a very short time because already we are seeing our athletes locally trained, locally based are hitting the international competitions and medaling not only in South America but internationally.” Norton added.
The project was featured in the 2018 National Budget as part of the government’s ongoing drive to boost the level of sports across the country, while improving the level of Track and Field along with the local athletes.
