2 to be charged for Orlando Jonas’ murder

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has advised that the Police lay charges against the two suspects in its custody for the murder of 26-year-old Orlando Jonas of Number One Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

This was announced by the Guyana Police Force.

A mechanic from Tain, Corentyne, Region Six (East Corentyne-Berbice), has confessed to stabbing 29-year-old Jonas of Number One Village, Corentyne, on Saturday last at Kilcoy. Reports are the suspect told investigators that Jonas and his friend, Mahendra Ramnarine, attempted to rob him and one of his friends.

The suspect in his confession statement claimed that he stabbed Jonas in self-defence after the man and his accomplice confronted him with a knife.

Both the suspect and his friend had marks of violence when they went to the police station, which is about two minutes’ walking time from where the incident took place, this newspaper was told.

However, Ramnarine had told this publication that as they were riding home, one of the two men said something to Jonas, who turned around and confronted them.

Investigators were able to obtain surveillance footage of the incident and confrontation.

Jonas was stabbed to the abdomen and suffered lacerations to the face and neck.

At the time of the incident, he was riding a bicycle belonging to his boss, who has since told Police that Jonas had been working for him as a construction worker for the past month.
