Home News 2 women from Region 1 die from COVID-19
…as cases increase by 26
Two women from Region One (Barima-Waini) are the country’s latest COVID-19 deaths, which now total 60.
They are an 80-year-old woman whose identity and circumstances were not revealed by the Health Ministry; and a 63-year-old woman named Phyllis Chacon, Guyana Times understands.
Chacon was admitted to the hospital on August 29 and was in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She was already suffering from diabetes and severe anaemia.
Meanwhile, as of September 16, 2020, Guyana recorded a total of 1984 COVID-19 cases. In March, the country registered its first imported case of the coronavirus, which was also the first fatality.
According to the Ministry’s dashboard, the country recorded 26 new cases. The number of persons in the ICU is listed as 16 while the number of tests conducted to date is 11,359.
Of the total cases registered, 978 are males while 1006 are females.
There are more than 600 active cases. According to the statistics, 52 persons are in institutional isolation, 555are in home isolation while 84 are in institutional quarantine.
Moreover, 1302 persons have recovered from the virus.
The Health Ministry had previously explained that as testing increased, so would the number of cases reported increase.
As it relates to the rapid increase in COVID-19 deaths, an official from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) had explained that this could be because of comorbidity: patients have one or more underlying conditions.
Meanwhile, the Health Ministry continues to encourage persons to take all necessary precautions to avoid contracting the virus. These include the need for correct and consistent use of face masks when leaving their homes; maintaining six feet of physical distance from others; and good hand hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
