2 women remanded for cocaine bust at CJIA

Two women were on Tuesday morning remanded to prison following a cocaine bust at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) over the weekend.
Shellon Barrow and her friend, Christine Griffith, were charged for trafficking 1.638 kilograms of cocaine and aiding the trafficking of narcotics respectively.
The women appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Barrow, 35, of Lot 35 Victoria Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, who was reportedly busted by agents of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) on Saturday, denied she had the cocaine in her possession.
Her friend, Griffith, age 37, of Pike Street, Kitty, who allegedly delivered the suitcase containing the illicit drug to Barrow, denied that she committed that offence between the September 14-15, 2018 at the Sunset Hotel, Georgetown.
The court heard that Barrow was intercepted while attempting to board a flight destined for Jamaica with the suspected cocaine concealed in a false wall of her hard cover suitcase.
After being detained, Barrow reportedly implicated Griffith telling the agents that she was given the suitcase by her friend, Griffith.
CANU’s Prosecutor Konyo Sandiford however revealed that video footage was obtained of Griffith further implicating herself in the trafficking of the cocaine.
Both women were remanded to prison and will next reappear in court on October 8.
Only on September 13, 2018, 46-year-old Karen Stuffle was jailed for four years by the Chief Magistrate after she attempted to traffic 1.42 kilograms of cocaine on September 9, 2018, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA)by consuming same in her stomach and stashing some in her vagina.
Another woman, Alicia Coppin, was also caught at the JFK Airport in the United States by ranks there with cocaine in her stomach and vagina as well. She has since been detained.
