20-year-old motorcyclist killed in Edinburgh crash

…eyewitness claims 2 motorcycles were racing before crash

Twenty-year-old Adriano Anthony lost his life following a collision with a motor car along the Edinburgh Public Road, East Bank Berbice (EBB), Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) on Saturday evening.

Dead: Adriano Anthony

Anthony, of Lot 1064 New Glasgow Housing Scheme, EBB, succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.
The accident occurred at about 19:50h on Saturday and involved motorcycle CR 6077, owned and ridden by Anthony, and motor car PJJ 8613, driven by a 22-year-old man of Lochaber Village, West Canje, Berbice.
According to preliminary police investigations, Anthony was proceeding south along the eastern driving lane of the Edinburgh Public Road, allegedly at a fast rate of speed, when the motor car, which had been stationary on the western side of the roadway, made a sudden left turn into his path.
The motorcycle collided with the left side of the car, throwing Anthony onto the roadway, where he sustained injuries about his body.
However, an eyewitness who was nearby at the time described seeing two motorcycles approaching the vehicle, claiming that they appeared to have been racing before the fatal crash.
The eyewitness recalled attending to household chores and cleaning a vehicle when a car stopped along the roadway, attracting their attention. The driver reportedly signalled an intention to turn before the motorcycles approached.
“One actually passed the car that was indicating to turn, and the other one I just slam,” the eyewitness recounted.
The eyewitness claimed that the second motorcycle did not appear to have its lights illuminated.
“But I didn’t see that second bike had any light, no light at all,” the eyewitness said.
Although police have not confirmed the allegations of racing or the absence of motorcycle lights, their preliminary findings indicate that Anthony was allegedly travelling at a fast rate of speed when the collision occurred.
Following the impact, the eyewitness rushed towards the injured motorcyclist and attempted to secure transportation to the hospital.
“When I rushed over, I saw the child was lying there. I tried to render assistance by calling a taxi so that he could rush to the hospital,” the eyewitness related.
The eyewitness also contacted the police, requesting that ranks visit the scene to document the accident and conduct their investigations.
Anthony was subsequently taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was examined by a doctor but succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
The fatal collision has also brought attention to concerns about dangerous motorcycle riding along the Edinburgh Public Road, with the eyewitness alleging that the area is frequently used by motorcyclists performing wheelies and other stunts.
“…minutes after, you know, I saw a bike was doing wheelies and stunts on this road. And there’s a normal thing in Edinburgh here, right” the eyewitness stated.
The eyewitness said the continuation of such activities, even shortly after the fatal collision, shoes the need for greater vigilance along the roadway.
“A lot of motorbike guys would be riding up and down the road doing a lot of wheelies, a lot of stunts, and making a lot of disturbing noise,” the eyewitness added.
The eyewitness, who indicated having several years of motorcycle-riding experience, also expressed the view that riders should exercise caution when approaching vehicles signalling an intention to turn, even when they have the right of way.
Meanwhile, police confirmed that a breathalyser test conducted on the 22-year-old motor car driver returned a zero reading. He remains in custody assisting with investigations.
Anthony’s body is at the mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination (PME).
