20-year-old placed on $250,000 bail for allegedly raping minor

Twenty-year-old Mark Fontanelle of Kwakwani, Upper Berbice River, has been placed on bail in the sum of $250,000 on an alleged rape charge.
Having made a virtual appearance before Magistrate Wanda Fortune at the Kwakwani Magistrate’s Court, his lawyer requested that he be placed on bail in a reasonable amount.

The young man was arrested on November 7 and charged for the rape of a child under 16 years old, contrary to Section 10(3) of the Sexual Offences Act, Chapter 8:03.
During the virtual hearing, his attorney argued that her client works at his grandmother’s shop and plans to further his studies. She also declared that the young man has never had any previous brushes with the law, and is not a flight risk.
The accused was placed on $250,000 bail under the condition that he reports to the S/O in charge of the Kwakwani Police Station on the first Monday of every month until the determination of his matter. In addition, he is to have no contact with the victim.
He has also been ordered to lodge his passport and all travel documents with the Police, but, in this case, he was never the owner of a passport or any travel document.
The matter has been adjourned to December 17, 2021.
