As investigations continue into the murder of seven-year-old Adriel Altab Mohamed and the attempted murder of his great-grandmother, detectives were able to secure a confession from the 23-year-old suspect. This was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of Police and Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum on Sunday, who related that detectives confronted the suspect with compelling digital evidence that placed him at the crime scene. As such, the suspect confessed to the gruesome murder and provided detectives with a detailed account of when he entered the home and what transpired thereafter. While the crime chief could not go into details, he stated that the knife recovered at the crime scene on that fateful day was confirmed by the suspect as the weapon used to kill the boy and attempt the murder of the 72-year-old woman. In addition, the man, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol, also confirmed that prior to entering the victims’ home, he had entered another yard nearby but retreated from entering that home after hearing movements, which alerted him that someone was awake. He claimed that he was imbibing at a nearby shop before committing the act. Blanhum stated that in a haste to leave before an alarm was raised, he left his slippers and a music player, which were later identified by him as his belongings. Further, this publication was told that detectives also retrieved blood-stained clothing worn by the suspect during the attack. These will be submitted to the Forensic Science Laboratory along with other pieces of evidence for analysis. Blanhum also stated that after committing the act, the suspect went to his place of employment. His employer later told detectives that the young man showed up for work with a visible wound on his hand, which he did not have the day before. When questioned, he admitted that he received the cut while carrying out the heinous act. The suspect was arrested one day after slashing the throat of the boy and stabbing the elderly woman in her neck during the home invasion on Friday at their Phase 3, Zeelugt New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) home.
The lifeless body of the child was found lying in a pool of blood, while his great-grandmother was found stabbed in the neck and lying on the ground at about 05:05h on Friday. According to reports received, a relative went to the home, where he discovered the 72-year-old woman injured and the child motionless inside the house. The injured woman was taken to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where she was admitted as a patient. Her condition is listed as stable. On the other hand, the child suffered a gaping wound to his neck.
Following the gruesome discovery, the child’s uncle, Naseeb Mohamed, said he was at home when he received a telephone call informing him that someone was inside his mother’s house. Upon arriving at the residence, he pushed open the door and entered. After switching on the lights, he found his mother lying on the floor. He said he could not explain what happened but noted that the two adults who usually stay in the home with his mother and the child had traveled to Essequibo for work. The aggrieved uncle also mentioned that they obtained CCTV footage from nearby residents, which shows a single individual climbing over the gate. The boy’s father, Altaf Mohamed, is struggling to come to terms with the loss of his son, expressing deep regret that he was not present to protect him. He said the child had been left at home alone because he had gone out to work, adding that he had previously taken his son away from his mother because he did not want him raised by a stepfather. Mohamed explained that he had intended to collect his son on Friday morning but was told by his father that he would handle the pickup instead. That plan changed when he later received a phone call from his sister informing him that his son had been killed. The suspect remains in custody pending charges.
