24 months’ jail for father who stole jewellery to support kids

A father of three who stole jewellery and cash from his girlfriend to provide care for his children was on Monday jailed for 24 months.
Thirty-five-year-old Winston Marshall of Georgetown told the Court that he stole the gold jewellery valued $847,000; $200,000 in Guyanese currency and US$300 from girlfriend Abeena Hudson’s D’Urban Street, Georgetown home.
Police stated that Marshall stole the articles some time between April 6 and June 7, 2018.
Hudson had the stolen items stashed in a suitcase and on June 7, she noticed that the said suitcase was out of place.
After checking, the woman realised that the items were missing and as such, confronted Marshall. He admitted to the offence and was arrested by Police after Hudson reported the matter.
He explained to Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman that he pawned the jewellery “to feed my children and to pay off my debts”.
After considering the prevalence of the offence and to deter others from doing same, Magistrate Latchman imposed the sentence.
