24 teams to play in Petra Futsal Championships

kick-off set for Monday at National Gymnasium

Petra Organisation continues to pave the way for football development as on Tuesday evening they launched their second Futsal Championship yesterday at Brandsville Hotel Conference room, Campbellville.

The event will feature 24 teams and commences on Monday at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.

The winner of the tournament is set to pocket $400,000 and the championship trophy while the second, third and fourth place finishers will collect $200,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively and the correspondingly accolade.

Petra Organization Co-Director Troy Mendonca during brief remarks thanked the National Sports Commission (NSC) for making the venue accessible, noting “Our organization has set ourselves certain mandates which are to assist in the resuscitation of the sport in the school system and other areas that we see fit”.

He further added “We will continue to run programs that we set out on a yearly basis and this is one of them. We are going ahead because this is one of our core events”.

Asked if title sponsor is expected to come onboard with the tournament, he added that the organization is currently in the process of engaging possible title sponsors.

The first round of matches will be an elimination round, with the resulting 12 teams being divided into three groups of four. The competing teams are defending champion Bent Street, Sparta Boss, North Ruimveldt, Tiger Bay, Albouystown, Tucville, Festival City, Campbellville, Sophia, Back Circle, Stevedore Housing Scheme, West Back Road, West Front Road, Leopold Street, , Hustlers, North East La Penitence, Alexander Village, Channel-9 Warriors, Broad Street Bullies, Agricola Champion Boys, Kitty, Globe Yard, Showstoppers and Camp Street All-Stars.

Upon the conclusion of the round-robin stage, the top two finishers and the best two third ranked teams from the respective groups will progress to the quarterfinal phase.

The event is slated to conclude on April 15th.
