Senior Minister with Responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh, has revealed that the Government has processed a total of 241,614 cash grants to citizens across the country.
In his recent update on the cash grant distribution exercise, the Minister explained on Wednesday evening that of this figure, some 218,227 persons have received their $100,000 cash grant directly into bank accounts via commercial banks and the New Building Society (NBS).
Previously, NBS accountholders were unable to receive payments directly into their bank accounts as a result of some technological issues that are peculiar to that institution. But the Minister revealed that those issues have since been sorted out.
“We listened to the concerns that were expressed, and we were able to put in place a workaround solution that has now enabled us to include the New Building Society on the portal. So, persons with bank accounts at the NBS can now register on the portal to receive their cash grants into their NBS accounts,” he noted.
In fact, so far, approximately 1388 persons have since been able to receive their cash grants directly into their NBS accounts.
Apart from the 218,227 persons who have received direct deposits of their cash grant into their commercial bank accounts or NBS accounts, the Government has also implemented a special solution for persons living in hinterland areas and remote communities. This saw personnel travelling to these locations, resulting in approximately 23,387 persons with limited access to banking services receiving their cash grants directly.
“As a result of those special arrangements, a grand total of 241,614 persons have now received their cash grants, of which 218,227 persons got their cash grants directly into their accounts without having to leave their home and without having to join a line to register anywhere, to uplift a cheque, and/or to deposit a cheque or to cash their cheque,” the Minister stated.
Dr Singh used the opportunity to encourage more persons, who have not as yet, to utilise the online portal at cashgrant.gov.gy to register and get their $100,000 cash grant deposited directly into their bank account, describing it as the most efficient way to receive payments directly into bank accounts.
The Government rolled out this latest tranche of cash grant distribution earlier this year with some 48,858 central Government employees, whose banking information is already available, receiving the first set of direct transfers.
Home-based registration
The Government has also announced that they will also commence home-based registration support for shut-ins, including elderly and incapacitated persons, using data from old age pension and National Insurance Scheme (NIS) records.
Additionally, help desks will be established nationwide to assist citizens who have been unable to complete the online registration process.
The cash grant programme is open to Guyanese citizens aged 18 and older. While bank account details are required for direct deposits, the Finance Minister had previously assured that persons without bank accounts will still receive their payments through alternative arrangements.
During the previous national cash grant initiative, in late 2024 into 2025, more than $60 billion of disposable income was transferred into the pockets of over 600,000 Guyanese. Another $60 billion is expected to be transferred in this second round of distribution.
These two cash distribution exercises come on the heels of the first National Cash Grant of $25,000 per household that was paid when the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) resumed office in 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
