28 Lethem families receive steel & cement vouchers to advance home construction

Some 28 families in Lethem, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), who have commenced constructing their homes, received steel and cement vouchers from the Housing Ministry on Sunday. The initiative forms part of the Government’s ongoing efforts to support homeowners who are actively building, ensuring they can continue construction and move closer to completing their homes. Each voucher is valued at $300,000.
Subject Minister Croal expressed satisfaction at the level of participation in the programme, noting that many families are taking advantage of the opportunity to accelerate their building process. “We are pleased that persons are taking advantage of this initiative, which is extremely helpful. In many cases, the work that has already been carried out on these homes is being used by the banks as collateral for securing mortgages,” Croal stated.

He added that the support is designed to reduce financial pressure on families while encouraging homeownership. For the beneficiaries, the assistance represents more than financial support, as in many cases it brings hope of completing their home.
Nadia Davidson expressed her appreciation to the Government for the timely support. “I must thank the Government of Guyana and the Ministry of Housing. I feel proud, and I know with this, it will be a great help for me and my family.”
Another beneficiary, Ron Albert, shared similar sentiments, describing the assistance as a much-needed push forward. “I would like to express my gratitude to the Government of Guyana and the Ministry of Housing. This will give me a great boost for the construction of my home and will encourage others to take advantage of this programme.”

Meanwhile, Alisa Mootoo, another beneficiary, encouraged others who are currently building to apply for the initiative, noting that the programme provides meaningful support for families working towards homeownership.
To date, over 3000 steel and cement vouchers had been successfully distributed across Regions Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Nine, and 10. The programme was launched under the leadership of President Dr Irfaan Ali, with the overarching aim of supporting affordable home construction and enhancing the quality of life for families across all of Guyana. The vouchers are redeemable at approved suppliers and are intended to support faster housing development within emerging schemes.
