Home News 28 new COVID-19 cases confirmed
Confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continue to rise with increased testing, as 28 new positives were recorded as of Tuesday. As a result, the total figure of positive cases in Guyana has climbed to a whopping 737.
In the Health Ministry’s daily dashboard, two new deaths were also reported – which raised fatalities to 25.
A breakdown showed that there are 61 persons in institutional isolation – an increase of two patients. Meanwhile, six more persons are in institutional quarantine, adding to the total 76. There are 282 persons under home isolation and four persons in the designated Intensive Care Unit (ICU). In one day, there were 16 recoveries, and this now amounts to 364 recuperated patients.
A gender distribution shows that 373 males and 367 females contracted the virus.
Meanwhile, a breakdown of the regional contraction rate illustrated that 106 positives were detected in Region One (Barima-Waini), eight in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), 38 in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), 208 in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), one in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), one in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), 167 in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), nine in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), 156 in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) and 43 in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
New cases
The new cases originated from Regions Three, Four, Seven and Nine. To date, health authorities have conducted tests on 6173 persons. In less than a week, three new deaths were reported.
Persons are asked to continue wearing masks, practice social distancing and continue their sanitary practices to curtail any possible spread. Those experiencing symptoms are asked to get tested for COVID-19 or contact the national COVID-19 hotlines.
On Tuesday, the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) supplied a large quantity of hygienic products to the Human Services and Social Security Ministry, which would be distributed countrywide in an effort to maintain health protocols during the pandemic.
Meanwhile, international organisations have also donated to the Health Ministry in the form of medical supplies and testing kits to assist in detecting new cases and treat infected cases safely.
On Monday, the United Nations Children’s Fund, a United Nations agency responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid, supported Guyana’s COVID-19 fight with a donation of personal protective equipment.
Last week, the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) made a sizeable donation of gears to the health sector, comprising of stethoscopes, oxygen concentrators, medications, 5200 gowns, 264000 surgical masks, 58000 respirator masks, 2800 goggles and 30000 face shields.
These resources have been donated to health units across the country where needed. The Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony has also pledged to increase testing to ensure all positive cases are detected and isolated. (G12)
