Senior Magistrate Leron Daly on Friday sentenced 29-year-old Stedmond Smart to three years and six months’ imprisonment when he appeared before her and admitted to having a quantity of narcotics in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

The charge against Smart stated that on August 22, 2019, at Princess Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown, he had in his possession 16.159 kilograms, equivalent to 36 pounds, of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
The unrepresented man after admitting to the charge told the court that he was keeping the marijuana for his friend.
“I collected it from a friend to keep and he was [supposed to] collect it the following day but he did not show up,” he said in a plea of mitigation.
However, Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh informed the court that on August 22, ranks went to Smart’s home and conducted a search. During the search, ranks searched a bedroom and a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems were found in a blue barrel.
Smart was told of the offence and while being cautioned, he admitted to keeping the illegal substance for a friend.
The Magistrate after listening to the facts jailed Smart.
