291 more persons test positive for COVID

The Health Ministry on Thursday reported that another 291 persons have tested positive for COVID thus bringing the total confirmed cases to 60,676 – 28,035 males and 32,641 females.
New statistics released by the Ministry showed that there were no fatalities over the past 24 hours and as such, the death toll remains at 1176, with 53,600 recoveries.
There are 11 patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 132 in institutional isolation, and 5768 in home isolation. Another 15 persons are being monitored in institutional quarantine.
Guyana has since tested 511,981 persons thus far.
New cases were detected across nine administrative regions, with 61 in Region One (Barima-Waini), 30 in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), 28 in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), 87 in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), 110 in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), 30 in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), one in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), 38 in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) and four in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
There were no new cases in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni).
Vaccination continues among the population, with the latest figures showing 424,702 first-dose recipients among the adult population or 82.8 per cent. Second doses are at 314,960 or 61.4 per cent.
For adolescents, 23,156 or 31.7 per cent are fully vaccinated. Some 40,220 persons have returned for their booster shots.
Government started administering booster shots after studies around the world showed that the efficacy of the vaccines wanes after six months of receiving both doses. Persons have been encouraged to take the booster dose.

Globally, 376 million people have been infected, with over 5.6 million reported deaths. In the Americas, cases have surpassed 135 million with 2.5 million deaths.
