2nd body found in canal at Port Mourant in 10 days
Police in Berbice are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 43-year-old man whose body was discovered in a canal at Port Mourant, Corentyne, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), on Monday afternoon.
Dead is Anand Sookoo of Babu Jaan, Corentyne. Reports are that the body was seen floating in a canal just off the Corentyne Highway at around 15:00h on Monday.
This newspaper was told that Sookoo lived alone and was last seen earlier on Monday.
According to his uncle, Tamishwar Jagmohan, who arrived in the country earlier in the day, he went to the scene after hearing that a body was discovered in the canal.
He said it was only after it was fished out that he realised that it was his nephew.
He said his nephew was unemployed and frequently consumed alcohol.
“He lived by himself and his mother recently left the country,” Jagmohan explained.
This is the second body to be found floating in a canal at Port Mourant in ten days.
On August 20, a man was seen lying motionlessly in a drain on the northern side of the Port Mourant Public Road.
According to Divisional Commander Jairam Ramlakhan, the man is yet to be identified. (G4)
