3 arrested at party in Linden for violating COVID-19 guidelines

Three persons were arrested by Police in Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) on Saturday evening after they were allegedly caught at a party at One Mile, Wismar.

Deputy Regional Police Commander Wayne Dehearte

According to Police, the trio is expected to be charged and placed before the courts for violating COVID-19 restrictions, which are currently in place countrywide.
According to reports, ranks swooped down on the location at approximately 22:00h and made the arrests. The promoter of the event is also being questioned.
Only last week, Deputy Regional Police Commander Wayne Dehearte said the Police were not fully satisfied that residents were taking all required precautions, but were somewhat pleased that fewer persons were breaking the curfew-related measures that were implemented to combat the COVID-19 outbreak.
He admitted that the Police in Region 10 continued to battle with persons congregating at various creeks; however, when information on such is passed on to law enforcement, they would act immediately.
He added that the GPF continued to maintain a no-nonsense approach towards these gatherings as they were aware of the impact of the dreaded virus.
The Deputy Commander reminded that not only medical personnel were frontline workers, stressing that the Police themselves were frontline workers.
He noted that the public must be more cognisant that the Police ranks were risking their lives on a daily basis. “It’s important too that we adhere to the regulations as I continue to say that our law men and women are exposed,” Dehearte further added.
He urged residents to be proactive and vigilant of the dangers that the virus posed, stressing that failure to adhere to the health guidelines would result in the numbers continuing to increase.
He emphasised that a lack of self-discipline was what was creating the increased challenges.
“If persons realise that by flouting regulations, they are exposing themselves and others to the effects of this disease, they will stop, as we firmly believe that some persons will only begin to get serious when the death rate begins to increase drastically.”
