Reports are that the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon.
Guyana Times understands that the children who died are three girls identified as Michelle Jefferys, Alicia Dorrick and Nia Jefferys.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) in a social media post said that Commander of Regional Police Division Nine, Senior Superintendent Raphael Rose has confirmed that the three girls, aged five, six, and eight allegedly drowned in the ‘Razor Grass’ pond in Massara Village, North Rupununi. It was reported that the girls left their parents’ home to go for a swim. Their parents later started a search after they did not see them in the house. The girls were found floating in the pond by villagers who had joined the search. The Toshao of the village subsequently notified the Annai Police of the incident.
It was stated that Commander Rose has indicated that a Police team was deployed to the scene, and given that it is a remote area, he is awaiting details.
He, however, indicated that the girls are all related. Reports state that the tragic incident occurred when the girls were swimming in the Razor Grass ‘pond’ in the village.
