3 held in bus transporting cocaine remanded to prison

The driver of a Route 32 minibus and two passengers of the bus were remanded to prison after they were slapped with a joint charge for trafficking in narcotics.
The driver, 31-year-old Akeem Brumell; and the two passengers, Gary Toney, 46, and Oliton Sobers, 28, appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court on Friday. They pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on March 30, they had 11.4 kilograms of cocaine in their possession for the purpose of trafficking. Their matter will continue on April 28.
The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) said that its ranks, acting on information, intercepted a Route 32 minibus at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo (EBE). A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 10 parcels containing a quantity of cocaine.

According to CANU, a Smith & Wesson .40 calibre pistol with a magazine containing eight bullets was also found in the vehicle. As a result, the three men were arrested and escorted to CANU’s Headquarters where the drug, which carries an estimated street value of $12.5 million, was weighed in their presence.
The three accused were represented by Attorney-at-Law Konyo Sandiford.
