3 on bail for Berbice River ganja bust

Three men from Georgetown were on Friday released on bail when they appeared before Magistrate Renita Singh via Skype, for narcotics trafficking.

The trio – 40-year-old Collin Denny, a mason of Lot 41 Howes and Charles Streets Charlestown, Georgetown; 48-year-old Herbert Bartholomew, self-employed of Lot 35, New Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, and 43-year-old Alkevin Anthony, an electrician of Lot 377 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown – pleaded not guilty to the charge on Friday which stated that on June 24, 2020, at the Canje River, Berbice, they had 103 kilograms of cannabis in their possession for the purpose of trafficking.
According to the prosecution’s case, members of the Guyana Police Force were conducting a river patrol in the Canje River when they intercepted a wooden vessel in the vicinity of Sandaka with four males including the captain, who goes by the alias “Royo”, of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice.

A search of the boat revealed nine taped and compressed parcels; each containing cannabis.
The men were all arrested and escorted to New Amsterdam along with their boat which was powered by a 60-horsepower outboard engine.
However, while the police were able to apprehend them and the illegal drugs, one of the men jumped overboard with one of the officers during the arrest.
Reports are while in the vicinity of New Forest, West Canje, the captain suddenly held on to one of the ranks and plunged overboard with him; the policeman was quickly rescued but the captain swam ashore and escaped.
They were released on $350,000 and the case will continue on August 12.
Meanwhile, the police issued a wanted bulletin for Elroy Oral Bristol.
