3-week-old baby kept at Police Station for breastfeeding

Mother’s arrest

East Berbice Police on Wednesday arrested 24-year-old Nadia Beharry and her mother, 42-year-old Urmila Beharry, after Maureen Sundarsingh of Lot 316 Fifth Street, Rose Hall Town, Corentyne was reportedly stabbed at her brother’s wake.
Following her arrest, Nadia’s three-week-old baby began experiencing distress in her feeding schedule, and eventually had to be taken to the Whim Police Station on Saturday to stay with her mother in order to be breastfed.
Sundarsingh’s brother, Wayne Sundarsingh, was, on July 14, beaten unconscious during a drinking and gambling spree at Bulletwood Street, Rose Hall Town.
He subsequently died. Days later his sister was stabbed, and remains a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Public Relations and Press Officer of the Guyana Police Force, Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan, has said inquiries are being made to determine whether the young mother can be placed on station bail, so that the infant will not have to be at the Police Station.
