30,266 speeding tickets issued in 6 months

…more roads to come under surveillance by year end

A total of 30,266 speeding tickets were issued under the Safe Road Intelligence System (SRIS) during the first six months of the year, according to the mid-year report released by the Finance Ministry on Monday.
The SRIS currently oversees 112 lanes across Regions Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) and Four (Demerara-Mahaica), and according to the report, an additional 48 lanes will come under its review by year-end. The expansion will target additional areas in Region Four as well as, for the first time, in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
The issuance of the 30,266 tickets, the report outlined, contributed to efforts to curb speeding and disincentivise reckless driving. Moreover, it noted that the tickets issued during the first half of the year contribute to a total of 62,450 issuances since the SRIS was launched in April 2025.
The SRIS is an automated traffic monitoring and e-ticketing network launched by the Guyana Police Force and the National Data Management Authority (NDMA).
It currently covers major roadways, including the Heroes Highway, the Mandela to Eccles Interlink Road, some locations in Georgetown, and sections of the East Bank of Demerara, East Coast of Demerara, and West Bank of Demerara Public Roads. SRIS cameras are also operational on the Bharrat Jagdeo-Demerara River Bridge.
Motorists can check for outstanding fines online using the Guyana Police Force Ticket Portal by entering a ticket number, TIN, or vehicle registration.
Auto control speed regulators
Meanwhile, in another bid to improve road safety, the Government has procured 8000 auto control speed regulators, which it said it will install on trucks. According to the mid-year report, the installation exercise is scheduled to commence in the second half of the year.
Already, members of the Police Force have been provided with the necessary training for the implementation of this new initiative, which is intended to ensure trucks travel at a prescribed speed.
Further, with respect to the establishment of heavy-duty parking lots, the report has noted that works progressed on the Grove, East Bank Demerara facility and is slated to be completed by the end of the year.
It added that in the second half of the year, works are slated to commence on heavy-duty parking lots in No 8 and No 75 Villages, Berbice; Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara; and Enmore, East Coast Demerara.
To better regulate the use of the roadways by trucks and heavy-duty vehicles, the Government had last year deployed 20 weigh-in-motion scales and 400 vehicle clamps across various thoroughfares. The Government enforces a 15-tonne per axle limit for heavy trucks.
