32 new recruits join GPS after intensive training

The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) is strengthened with 32 new officers after an intensive three-month training programme under Recruit Course 3/2026.
The recruits have undergone rigorous training to prepare for essential roles in prison administration, inmate rehabilitation support, facility operations, and broader national security functions.
Their deployment will significantly enhance the GPS’s capacity, while offering young Guyanese dignified career pathways within one of the country’s key security institutions.
Addressing the pass-out ceremony at the Mazaruni Prison Officers’ Sport, Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot reaffirmed the Government’s strong commitment to creating sustainable employment opportunities for youth through strategic, high-impact partnerships.
He applauded the recruits for their dedication throughout the training and encouraged them to uphold the highest standards of discipline, integrity, and professionalism as they assume their duties in service to the nation.
Elliot told the new officers that the prison service was not solely about confinement but about corrections, skill development, and reintegration.

He added that prison work is demanding and involves working with men and women who have been deprived of their liberty, many of whom are likely to be mentally disturbed, suffering from addiction, have poor social and educational skills, and come from marginalised groups in society.
Further, Elliot explained that dealing with different groups of inmates who have been deprived of their liberty and face confinement demands patience while at the same time stressing the need for prison officers to treat the inmates in accordance with international protocols and standards.
The new prison officers will be assigned to various locations to support the daily operational activities of the service.
