$346M contract signed for primary school at Amelia’s Ward

The signing of a $346 million contract by the Local Government and Regional Development Ministry will pave the way for the construction of a primary school in Amelia’s Ward/Bamia, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
The contract was awarded to Sta8tment Investment Incorporated for the new school to be developed, catering for some 800 students.
According to Regional Development Minister Nigel Dharamlall, the contract is expected to be completed within 20 months.
“This area is very important in the development scope of our country because of its magnitude and potential…We expect that by 2024, students are going to be housed in this school and it will be operable to its full capacity,” he outlined.
The Minister urged contractors to hire persons within the communities, as he added that a team will be supervising the scope of works to be completed.
“We expect that you are going to construct this school diligently. There will be an engineering firm that will provide supervision for the construction. This contract plus the supervision is in excess of $366 million. So, we hope that it will read down to the benefit of children in Region 10 and also, we hope that the contractors will take the opportunity to employ as many persons as possible from Region 10, more particularly the Bamia/Amelia’s Ward area.”
The bids were opened by the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) in July of this year, from which four companies made submissions.
Government has committed to developing Region 10 through a number of projects in areas of education, infrastructure, agriculture and tourism. (G12)
