…to serve nearly 800 students
The Bamia Primary School, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) was officially completed and opened on Monday, marking the delivery of a long-anticipated education project for communities in Bamia and the surrounding areas on the region. On Monday the Local Government and Regional Development Ministry said that the school was delivered under its mandate reflects the Government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening regional infrastructure and improving access to essential services at the community level. While the facility is now open and operational, officials noted that the liability period on the project is still ongoing.

The modern facility features spacious classrooms, administrative offices, sanitary facilities and supporting infrastructure aimed at improving teaching and learning outcomes for hundreds of pupils. The school is expected to accommodate close to 800 students drawn from Bamia and neighbouring communities. Construction of the school followed the signing of a contract in November 2021, with the overall cost reported at approximately $364 million. The facility was developed to replace inadequate learning conditions and to bring education services closer to families in the area. Local Government and Regional Development Minister, Priya Manickchand, expressed satisfaction at the completion of the project, describing it as the result of sustained effort to ensure the school was delivered for both pupils and teachers. She said the completion of the school was a major and consistent effort that had to be employed to get this school finished. The Minister emphasised that delays or failures in realising the Government’s vision for universal access to education have a direct impact on children and educators. She noted that such outcomes are the opposite of what the Government intends and desires, underscoring the administration’s focus on ensuring equitable access to quality education nationwide. As a regional project, the completion of Bamia Primary School also highlights the role of local Government in identifying community needs and implementing development works that directly benefit residents.

With the school now open, students will benefit from improved learning conditions closer to home, while teachers are supported by a modern and functional facility.
