Home News 3rd victim succumbs, another loses eye
Mahaicony accident
The horrific accident at Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, over the weekend has claimed its third victim as Aresh Harris succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Guyana Times has also learnt on Monday that the condition of the surviving passenger, Dominique Ally of Melanie, has stabilised. The others who died were Stephen Phillips, called “Peter Mal” of Buxton, ECD, and Abbenna Hubbard, 21, of Melanie, ECD, who were killed at the scene.
Police on Monday also confirmed that Ally was responding to doctors and relatives. This publication was told both of her legs were broken as well as her arm and she lost an eye.
Reports are the trio, along with Ally, travelled from Mahaicony after attending a pool party. In the vicinity of Perseverance, Mahaicony, the driver of the car, Stephen Phillips, reportedly fell asleep and lost control of the vehicle which crashed into a tree.
Hubbard’s stepfather was the late crime journalist, Dale Andrews, who died in June 2016. Her mother, Michelle Meredith, a policewoman, told media operatives that she was still coming to grips with losing two loved ones in just over a year.
“I tried to console myself and on arrival (to the hospital), we met the nurse and I told her I’m the mother and she was shaking her head and I said ‘don’t tell me that my daughter dead’ and that was it,” Meredith recalled.
The grieving woman added that she had encouraged her daughter to remain at home, but the 21-year-old Hubbard went out at the insistence of her friends. The mother feels that her daughter could have been alive if she had taken her advice. She noted that all of her Christmas plans have drastically changed, and observed that her daughter was excited for the holidays because of the renovation work being done in the home.
Attempts to contact relatives of the two men proved futile.
