4 homeless after fire guts 2 buildings in Berbice

Four persons are now homeless after two buildings went up in flames on Friday at Lochaber, West Canje, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne). The fire reportedly started at about 12:50h.
Residents of Angoy’s Avenue related that the fire started from an unattended burning garbage heap.
Based on reports received, one of the buildings was occupied by a man and his son who were not at home at the time of the blaze while the other house was by a couple.
The fire reportedly started at the couple’s home and quickly spread to the other house.
A resident explained that prior to the fire, his neighbour was burning garbage.
“It was about 10 O’clock when he was burning garbage and then it start to spread and catch the grass.”
Wilson further explained that at one point, he went with the aim of putting out the fire that was already spreading.
“I did not know that the fire was over there going to the house at the back. Is when I wake and look out, I see the small house burning so I try to save the big house but I couldn’t because it was me alone.”
Wilson said he used a bucket to fetch water from a nearby canal to douse the fire which had moved to the second building.
“I dash it on the side of the wall but the heat was so much. I had to run downstairs. Everything went haywire after that,” he explained. He said the fire service took a long while to respond and by the time they arrived at the scene, the buildings were already gutted.
