The Guyana Defence Force Coast Guards have launched a search for four persons who went missing following a boat mishap the vicinity of Sand Hills, some 60 miles up the Berbice River.
Reports are the incident occurred on Tuesday evening and villagers are alleging that a ‘marijuana boat’ collided with the vessel and sped away after the accident.
Those missing are Julian McKenzie and Godfrey Lindy, both of Sand Hills; Freeman Denheart, 55, and his son, Romario, 23, of Pepper Street, Heatburn Village, East Bank Berbice.
Reports are that the quartet was in a small boat travelling to Sand Hills sometime after 19:00h when a larger boat, powered by two 75-horsepower engines, collided with them.
Villagers who rushed to the scene on Tuesday night reported that the boat was broken into pieces. This publication was told that all that was seen of the four men were several slippers floating in the river.
This newspaper was told that the boat which collided with the quartet had left from Fort Canje on an expedition up the Berbice River on Tuesday morning.
Residents of the community claimed that the captain of the boat which sped away was a resident from Waruni – a village close to Sand Hills. According to residents, the boat is a known marijuana transport.
Following the incident, the Coast Guards were contacted and dispatched to the area. Up to press time, the quartet had not been located.
Police are investigating.
