The Health Ministry on Tuesday announced four more deaths from the novel coronavirus, making it 807 persons to die locally from the life-threatening virus since the pandemic started.
These persons were all unvaccinated and died on Monday. For October, 13 deaths have been reported.
Patients were admitted with COVID-19-like symptoms, and died while receiving care at medical institutions. Samples taken at the time of admission subsequently returned positive results.
The victims were a 69-year-old male from Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice); a 74-year-old female and a 70-year-old male from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) and a 66-year-old male from Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara).
There were 115 new cases in one day according to the Ministry’s dashboard, with the total confirmed cases in the country moving to 32,701 – 15,505 males and 17,196 females.
There are 34 patients in the designated COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 3485 in home isolation, 129 in institutional isolation, and two in institutional quarantine. The data shows that 28,246 patients have recovered from the life-threatening virus while 324,222 have been tested.
A breakdown shows five new cases in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam); 18 in Region Three; 41 in Region Four; three in Region Five (Demerara-Mahaica); 13 in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne); one in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni); one in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni); 13 in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) and 20 in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
There were no new cases in Region One (Barima-Waini).
There are 3847 active cases – a majority of which are from Regions Four (1828) and Three (1251). Diamond, Grove, Kitty, Sophia, West Ruimveldt, Mon Repos, Good Hope, Tuschen, and Parfaite Harmonie are some of the areas with high spikes. Other communities and wards are also under surveillance.
“We have seen from the trend that if people are unvaccinated, we are going to see more people getting infected among that grouping and the likelihood that they will get a severe form of COVID and end up in the hospital is much higher. We have a number of cases like this,” said Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony during Tuesday’s briefing.
