Another group of Venezuelans was on Wednesday deported by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Four Venezuelans were also fined $30,000 each after they admitted to entering Guyana illegally.
Appearing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts were Maria Tores, Edis Herrera, Sihai Herrera and Yisneidi Sidram.
The four admitted that on February 2, 2018, via the Cuyuni River, County of Essequibo; they entered Guyana and failed to produce themselves to an immigration officer.
The prosecution’s case stated that on February 6, Police on patrol at Two Mile Potaro, Bartica, saw the four persons and requested that they produce travel documents. They failed to produce the documents and as such were all arrested and escorted to the CID headquarters where further investigations were carried out and revealed that they entered Guyana illegally four days prior.
Only recently there were reports that boat loads of Venezuelans were entering the country at night without going through proper immigration process.
Minister of State Joseph Harmon at a recent media briefing pointed out that with the country’s porous borders; it makes it difficult to effectively man the borders.
Nevertheless, he noted that steps are being taken to boost law enforcement presence at these locations. Only recently, a Venezuelan man drowned while trying to swim across the border in search of food.
