Four teams secured wins on the second weekend of the West Demerara Cricket Association (WDCA) Independence Cup T20 Competition. Among the winners were Mc Gill Super Star, Zeeburg, Independence Sports Club and Belle West.
At Joe Vieira, Sarfraz Esau spearheaded Independence victory over Players Sports club by eight wickets with a commanding unbeaten knock of 96. Esau blasted 10 sixes and six four as his team raced to 171-2 in pursuit of 169 to win the match. It took the winners just 16.1 overs to complete the task. Ashkaya Persaud supported with 53 which included five sixes and two fours.
Earlier, Players were dismissed for 168 in 19.1 overs, with Yogendra Ramanan top scoring with 38 while Reaz Esau and J. Paton collected three wickets apiece.
The win was Independence team’s second in as many matches.
Mc Gill Super Star registered another win in the competition when they defeated Sawpit Sports Club by 26 runs at Canal Number 2. The game was reduced to 16 overs due to wet outfield. Mc Gill won the toss and elected to bat first as they posted 126-8 in 16 overs. Sudesh Persaud 35, Travis Persaud 31 and Shafiek Deen 21 were the main contributors with the bat. Imran Khan 4-36 in four overs Ganesh Puran 2-14 in three overs were Sawpit’s best bowlers.
In response Sawpit managed 100 all out in 13.5 overs, with Avinash Rameshwar 33 and Zaheer Khan 39, scoring in their thirties. Sudesh Persaud 5-11 from four overs led with the ball for Mc Gill.
At Meten Meer Zorg, Belle West won by 65 runs over MMZ B. Belle West took first strike and reached 138-9 in 20 overs before restricting MMZ B to 73 all out in 13.3 overs. Safraz Shakur claimed five wickets for Belle West.
Meanwhile, Zeeburg defeated All youths in their second match of the tournament. Scores-(Zeeburg 170-9 off 20 overs A. Rai 43, B. Shivpersaud 35, Mark Jeffers 26. All Youths in reply all out 126. Bowling for Zeeburg, Richie Looknauth picked up 4-17 and Yutesh Dhanpaul 2-19.
