Some 40 Cuban nationals living in Guyana have been displaced after a fire on Monday morning ripped through a multi-room rental building on South Road, Georgetown. The fire started at about 09:15h at Lot 216 South Road, Georgetown ripping through a two-storey building. Reports are that the two-storey wooden and concrete building housed Special Auto, an auto sales and spares dealership, on the ground floor, while the upper floor served as a private residence.
No serious injuries were reported and eyewitnesses claimed the blaze spread rapidly after electrical cables near the roof began smoking before catching fire. One resident claimed that a tenant carrying a child was among those trapped inside the building. However, with the combined assistance of other residents, the woman and child were safely rescued. Residents also said the section of the building that sustained the most extensive damage was the upper floor. According to the occupants, the building comprises approximately 11 to 12 rooms, with an average of four persons in each.
All occupants, including women and children, escaped unharmed. Meanwhile, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) said that upon arrival, firefighters found the upper floor fully engulfed in flames, with nearby buildings under immediate threat.
“Through swift, coordinated firefighting operations, the blaze was successfully contained to the upper floor, preventing it from spreading to surrounding properties,’ the GFS said.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are currently ongoing.
