427 traffic violation cases reported on Friday

Traffic officers carrying out traffic enforcement exercises

The Traffic Department of the Guyana Police Force reported a staggering total of 427 cases of traffic violations on Friday. Among these, 108 instances were linked to speeding, while eight were attributed to driving under the influence (DUI).
In response to this concerning trend, road safety officials have intensified their efforts to promote responsible driving. They have conducted educational programmes and lectures in schools, specifically targeting young drivers to emphasise the importance of adhering to traffic rules. These initiatives have also extended to bar owners, patrons, and individuals frequenting entertainment venues nationwide.
The core focus of these programmes is to instil a sense of responsibility and respect for the road and all road users. Law enforcement has emphasised that speeding is never a solution, and driving under the influence is never a viable choice. Such reckless actions not only jeopardise the lives of the offenders but also pose significant risks to other innocent road users.
The Force has urged citizens to strictly follow traffic laws, warning of rigorous enforcement against any violations. The objective is to create a safer road environment, ensuring full compliance with the country’s laws.
Recently, Traffic Chief, Senior Superintendent Mahendra Singh emphasised the need for responsible alcohol consumption among motorists.
He clarified that while individuals can drink within legal limits (with a permissible blood alcohol limit of 35 micrograms), it’s crucial to have a sober companion if planning to exceed this limit. Singh highlighted the potential for alcohol-induced confrontations and urged individuals to recognise their limits and remain in control.
He questioned the logic of excessive alcohol consumption leading to helplessness, especially when it endangers the lives of others on the road.
Over the past two months, the Guyana Police Force has significantly intensified its efforts to curb DUI cases. A month ago, 33 drivers were arrested and brought before the court on DUI charges. These arrests underscore the grave dangers associated with driving under the influence and demonstrate the Police Force’s unwavering commitment to ensuring road safety. (G9)
