48-hour hackathon begins today

GTT on Thursday handed over a cheque to Public Telecommunications Minister Cathy Hughes, as the Ministry stages its first 48-hour hackathon from today, November 4 to Sunday, November 6, at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC).
The cheque was handed over by Chief Executive Officer of the company, Justin Nedd, at the Centre.

The hackathon will be a 48-hour non-stop event where programmers or coders get to compete in teams to develop applications for possible use in the Public and Private Sectors.
Minister Hughes during an earlier press briefing pointed out that the event was seen as an opportunity for young entrepreneurs in Information Communication Technology (ICT) to be creative.
Hackathons are events, typically lasting several days, in which a large number of people meet to engage in collaborative computer programming.
The Minister had also emphasised the countless opportunities that can meet the needs of young people as the country advances in ICT. “We are working to ensure that we energise our young tech-savvy people in Guyana and I want to say that this really is going to be the first one, but in 2017 we anticipate we will have another two or three of such hackathons,” she stated.
