5 homeless after fire guts Sophia home

A taxi driver, his wife, and three children were rendered homeless after a fire of unknown origin destroyed their home at Block E, Plum Park, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, on Thursday.
According to the Guyana Fire Service, firefighters responded to reports of a house on fire at the location. A water tender and water carrier from Fire Service Headquarters were dispatched to the scene, along with their respective crews.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the flat wooden house fully engulfed in flames. Through the swift and coordinated efforts of the firefighting teams, the blaze was brought under control and extinguished.
However, the building and all of its contents were completely destroyed in the fire.
At the scene, Yolanda Gilgeous told the media that she was sitting on the veranda when she was alerted by a neighbour that section of the one-flat home was on fire.
“By the time I run inside to check, the whole one side was already on fire… I manage to take off one of the gas cylinders from the stove and carry it out of the house… by the time I try to go back in, the whole house was already engulfed,” the distraught woman explained.
The family was unable to salvage any household items from the inferno. Among the items destroyed were school materials and uniforms for the three minor children.
The affected occupants have been left displaced as investigations continue into the cause of the blaze.
