Reports are the fire started at about 08:30h in a bedroom in the upper flat of the home, but quickly engulfed the house.
Guyana Times understands that 20-year-old Shelliza Seepersaud was at home with her 18-year-old sister and two other cousins when they realised that the building was on fire and raised an alarm. Neighbours rushed to their aid but their attempts to extinguish the fire proved futile. The fire tenders took some time to arrive at the scene and as such, by the time they arrived, the entire house had already been engulfed in flames.
The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) Fire Chief, Marlon Gentle has since said that the fire was electrical.
