5 New Year’s Day babies welcome 2026 at GPHC

Second Lady of Guyana, Mignon Bowen-Phillips, ushered in the New Year with a heart-warming visit to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where she met babies born on New Year’s Day and their mothers on behalf of the Office of the First Lady. This year, five babies had been born at GPHC on January 1 up to the time of the visit – four girls and one boy – with the likelihood of more arrivals throughout the day. Many of the mothers were first-time parents, and the visit highlighted positive maternal health outcomes, with both mothers and babies reported to be healthy and doing well.

Bowen-Phillips was accompanied on a walk-through of the maternity wards by Dr Rambaran, Director of Medical and Professional Services, along with doctors, nurses, ward managers and members of the wider GPHC healthcare team. She took time to personally greet each mother, meet the newborns and express appreciation for the dedication and care shown by staff during the deliveries.

During the visit, mothers received gift packages and words of encouragement and wisdom from Mrs Bowen-Phillips, which were met with heartfelt gratitude. One mother, who delivered the first baby boy of the year, shared that the moment felt especially meaningful and expressed her commitment to nurturing and guiding her child in the years ahead. The visit reflected the joy of new life and shared celebration. As Guyana welcomed its first babies of the year, the New Year’s Day tradition once again highlighted compassion, care and new beginnings.
