50 families at La Parfait Harmonie to get Govt-built core homes

Some 50 families will soon settle into their new homes as the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) has completed the construction of a number of core homes in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara).

Housing and Water Minister, Collin Croal

The construction of these homes falls under CHPA’s Adequate Housing and Urban Accessibility Programme (AHUAP) which targets low-income residents.
The 20ft x 20ft two-bedroom concrete structures have been built in La Parfaite Harmonie.
At an event held on Wednesday, Housing and Water Minister Collin Croal disclosed that “already, we have constructed 50 Core Homes valued at $4 million each and these have been completed in La Parfaite Harmonie”.
Persons were required to apply for the core homes and once successful were expected to contribute $100,000. AHUAP also caters to home improvement subsidies of $500,000 in materials to upgrade their homes.
Croal further disclosed that the Government will soon commence the construction of a number of flat houses in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
He said, “We have another 125 flat houses that are expected to come on stream within two weeks in Region Three.”
In Region Three alone, over 3200 house lots have been distributed in the Government’s first two years in office.
Croal said so far in 2022, over 1400 lots have already been distributed.
Just recently, some 46 families who have for decades been squatting at Cameron Dam on the West Bank of Demerara in Region Three have been allocated lands at Lust-en-Rust, Canal Number One Polder.
Cameron Dam has been earmarked for road networking and other infrastructural development, and as such, relocating these families was necessary.
A representative from each household pulled lot numbers when the documentation process was initiated. Each family has been allocated a plot of land measuring 45 feet × 80 feet.
Some $3.4 billion in infrastructural works are ongoing in five housing developments in the region which cater for 2800 allottees. Works include land preparation, and construction of access roads, bridges, culverts, and drainage.
The infrastructural works also cater for the installation of electrical and water distribution networks in housing areas at Anna Catherina, Cornelia Ida, Edinburgh, La Parfaite Harmonie, Meten-Meer- Zorg, Uitvlugt, Zeelugt, Tuschen, Leonora, Groenveldt, and Stewartville.
