$54M spent to rehabilitate community roads in Industry, Vryheid’s Lust

Several roads in the communities of Industry and Vryheids Lust on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) were recently rehabilitated as the Public Works Ministry continues to execute its 2021 work programme.
Four roads in the Industry area – First, Sixth, Ninth and Market Streets – and Middle Street in Vryheid’s Lust were on Friday commissioned by Minister within the Public Works Ministry, Deodat Indar.
The Minister at the opening stated that the budgetary allocations have provided for works of this nature to be done in keeping with the Government’s mandate to transform and rehabilitate Guyana.

“We have been providing in our annual budget, significant sums of money to infrastructure in the country. The President’s plan that we campaigned on when we were in Opposition was that we’re going to transform Guyana – at the same time we have to rehabilitate the existing structures that we have,” the Minister expressed.
He further stated that for 2021, the Public Works Ministry has received $35.5 billion in the capital budget – the largest allocation the Ministry has ever had to manage.
However, the rehabilitation of the road at Vryheids Lust was done at a tune of $13.7 million while the roads at Industry were done at a cost of $41.6 million. The contracts were awarded to R&B Investments Incorporated.
The Public Works Minister urged residents to take care of the roads and more so to be watchdogs for those who want to destroy them.

“…it is new now, and I hope that the residents of the area, when people pass with their big trucks and they park it in the corner and leave it for days…that you all put it to a stop. That is the problem we’ve been having throughout the country. Just finish building a brand-new road, the asphalt has not even dried on the surface and you find massive trucks parking on the corner… and they start breaking the shoulders of the road, and once the shoulder starts to break the entire road starts to collapse.”
Meanwhile, residents in both communities expressed gratitude to the Government, particularly the Public Works Ministry for rehabilitating the roads which were in a deplorable state over the past years.
